Quilt NSW Sydney Quilt Show at Rosehill Gardens

We had no sooner returned from our month away and we were back in the car, travelling to Rosehill Racecourse to see the Quilt Show.  As usual, Mick came along too.  Now that there are two events each year in Sydney, and having visited the first one, I wanted to visit the second one to compare.  I must say that the Rosehill one was probably the one I would attend again. 

As always, we make a bee line for the quilts on display.  My, what a fantastic variety.  Where does one begin?

I am always drawn to creative denim quilts and really liked this one.  A relatively simple design, but really enhance by the quilting.

When we were in Alice Springs last year I bought some indigenous fabrics and haven’t decided how to use them yet.  We both really liked this quilt using similar fabrics.

Dotted throughout the display were these hooped minis.  They were a nice pop of colour.

This was a rather intriguing quilt, being a whole cloth.  The maze was stitched in machine blanket stitch.  So different.

We were impressed with this quilt.  All those log cabin blocks finish at two inches.

The workmanship on some was just next level.  This was very deserving of its awards.

When we started to visit quilt shows the machine quilting wasn’t anything like what is today.  A good example is this quilt made by Jackson Cook from Armidale.  He is a young quilter with real talent.

There were actually three generations of his family exhibiting.  His mother won a President’s Choice Award.  

His grandmother also had quilts on display.  This was also a great example of how machine quilting can transform a relatively simple design.

I loved the bling on this one.

This one made me think of Kiwi Kid.

At lunch I ran into these two ladies.  It was nice to catch up with Susan and Trish.

Susan had two quilts entered.  Her mini received the second prize.

And she was the deserving winner of best hand quilted.

This was another winner that I was really drawn to.  The colours just glowed.

So, which was the big winner this year?

What a stunning piece.

Sue was chatting about her quilt after she had been awarded the prize.  She had actually uses some soft yellow paint to blur the edges of the applique.

There was also a small display of antique quilts.

An interesting display put on by the Guild was small quilts and how long they took to make.

Once we had our fill of quilts, it was time to have a wander around the stalls.  I bought very little, just some sashiko needles, bobbins for Monique and a couple of pieces of fabric from “The Sewing Basket”.

Back outside, it was a glorious day and the Rosehill Racecourse grounds were looking a picture.

On the way home we stopped to stretch the legs at Blackheath.  The Jenny Kee mural is still looking resplendent on the wall of the Victory Theatre Antique Centre.  I was wondering how old it is, as it was one of the first murals around.  It turns out it was back in 1997.  It has lasted very well, still looking as good as the time it was painted.

What we did discover, is that Blackheath now had paid parking.  What a pity.

And so ended another fabulous day out.  We both really enjoyed seeing all the quilts.  As Mick says, it is like visiting an art gallery, just all being fabric art.
