Off to See the Wizard - Yulara Day 3

We haven’t had any internet coverage for the last couple of days, so a bit of catching up required.

Our third day at Yulara was a nice lazy day of just kicking around the resort, starting out by getting the laundry up to date, something you can’t get away from, even when travelling.  Once that was sorted we wandered over to the resort to take part in a couple of the free activities on offer.  When you get down to it, you didn’t need to spend any money once you had arrived, other than your camp site fee, if you were camping and self catering.
The first thing we attended was a little talk on bush tucker.  Jermaine had a beautiful display of bush tucker items he had collected in the gardens around the resort.  He talked us through what he had and how two very similar looking plants could have very different effects.  One was a good source of seeds for a dough, while the other was a laxative.  Once he had completed his talk Leon took over and gave a demonstration on making shortbread using wattle seeds as a flavouring, before we were all given one to try (previously cooked in the kitchens).  It was interesting and the fellows were entertaining.
Next to the theatrette is GOCA - the Gallery of Central Australia, showcasing indigenous art.  There were some beautiful works on display.
I loved the big “Palya” out the front.
Next we had a look in the shops and galleries.  I thought I would like a little memento of our visit, as we may never get here again, but I didn’t want some mass produced tat, or a tee shirt and not really a dot painting either.  In the end we found something rather lovely.  It is packed, so I will share when we unpack it when we get home.  Here is a little teaser. Mick was insistent I buy it.
We then had to head over for another free activity.  We had seen some didgeridoo lessons taking place on our first day and Mick thought he would like to have a go.  It’s not easy, but the teacher had all the fellows making a bit of a drone by the end of the little lesson.
Then the fellow teaching showed how it is really done…..show off.  He had been the one playing in the background the previous evening at the dinner.
To finish off our day, we hopped in the ute and drove out to watch the sun set over Uluru.  We found a nice spot and had the company of  another couple and a young lady on a working holiday.  Once again, a nice little group to share the time with.  Look at the changes in the colours.
And that was the grand finale of our time at Uluru.

We had so enjoyed our time in the area.  The whole place had a lovely feel to it and despite being the most popular tourist destination in the country, it didn’t feel crowded at all and not at all “glitzy”. The resort has a laid back feel and is nice and leafy.  We think they have it just about right.

The highlight of the day for Mick was the didgeridoo lesson and for me it was the Uluru sunset and our little souviner.
