January Wrap Up

I can’t believe that we are already at the end of January.  At the rate we are going, it will be 2024 before we know it.

So how did I go with my goals for January?  Firstly to my stitching goals.

ONE MONTHLY GOAL
My goal was to have my Swoon quilt top completed, ready to add to the “To be Quilted Pile”.
Tick.

RAINBOW SCRAP CHALLENGE
I completed my black and white blocks and started on some split nine patches.  I had considered working on a third project, but it didn’t happen.  I think I will stick with just the two, as there are so many other things I want to work on.

DONATION PROJECT
My plan was to make the little Winnie the Pooh quilt.
Another tick.

USE MONIQUE
The little donation quilt ended up being my first completed project using Monique.

HAND STITCHING
I wanted to make some more progress on my kitten cross stitch, which I did.  I can only work on it for short times as it is so hard to seen the light colours on the fabric.  I’ve finished most of the top left quadrant, so am looking forward to moving onto the next section.
I also ended up stitching all the butterfly antennae on my 2022 RSC quilt.

KNITTING OR CROCHET
I finished my socks.

UFO/WIP
Swoon was to fit the bill, but in the end my appliquéd butterflies also fell into this category.

FINISHED PROJECTS
My socks and the baby quilt both fit into this catergory.

LEADER AND ENDER
Not a lot to show here, but there are lots of HST tidied up and some have been stitched together.  This will be a slow progress project.  Every little bit helps.

15 MINUTES A DAY
I managed to keep this up for every day except one.  So 30 out of 31.  I would have liked it to be 31 out of 31, but I’m still pleased with what I did.
On the non stitching front…….

READ A BOOK
Two were read.

TRY A NEW RECIPE
Two were tried.  One not so good, but the blueberry crumble was excellent.

HAVE A FUN DAY OUT
We ended up having two.
WALK
I have been walking most mornings before the day gets hot.  I have missed some days, but a good start.

MOTORCYCLING AND CARAVANNING
We knew that we wouldn’t get away in the van this month and motorcycling didn’t happen, partly because Mick did his back in and was not able to ride for a while, and we don’t tend to like riding in the heat.  Hopefully, later in the year we will do some.

In summary, I didn’t think I had done a great deal, but there is a bit there to show for it.  Mind you, being retired certainly helps.

I’m now looking forward to my plans for next month.

Looking Back on 2022

It’s arrived at the time of year when I look back over the last twelve months.  I posted my wishes for 2022 back here.

As predicted, it was quite a year of change, with me giving up work at the end of June, as planned, and Mick winding his work right back, if not completely stopping.  2022 has also been the first year that life has returned to something like normal, after the onset of the pandemic nearly three years ago.  We are both happy with how life has turned out.

Each month I set myself some goals, which tend to keep me somewhat focused.  Most, but not all, get achieved.

On the stitching front, I only completed one quilt during the year, being the little Woodland Quilt, which I ended up giving to our next door neighbour’s new grandson.
An unexpected addition to my sewing room at the start of the year was “Monique”, the Grace 14+ quilting machine and frame.  I still haven’t tried her out very much, as I’m one of those people that want things to be perfect and I know that will initially not be the case.  2023 will be the year for much practice.
I made a few quilt tops, but rather than sending them off to my quilting fairy, they are sitting in the “to be quilted” queue.  Hopefully, they will be completed in 2023.
After looking at my January post, I realised that I still had two of the Swoon blocks to piece, so that was a task for December.  They will now have sashings added and be added to the “to be quilted” queue, rather than quilt as you go, as originally planned.
It was my wish to finally start on the Blue Quilt.  In the lead up to our big trip, I did lots of preparation and while we were away, completed quite a bit of EPP and the stitchery sections of the appliqué blocks.  It has always been planned to be a long term project, so I am pleased with the progress made.
I completed my Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks, but still have to make them into quilt tops.
I continued to participate in One Monthly Goal, meeting my goal each and every month.  That is a good feeling.  The accountability certainly works for me.  My goals are often rather small, but as long as they are achievable, taking into consideration whatever else is going on, that is all that matters.
Except for when we were travelling, I completed One Project a Month.  2022 has been the last year that Kris has hosted this.  I thank her so much for all she has done over many years.
Each year I try to do a little knitting or crochet during the winter months.  I excelled myself this year, completing a homespun beanie, a second beanie, a crocheted shawl and a knitted scarf.  I have knitted one sock, just before Christmas, and will knit the second very soon.
I even did a little cross stitch, making a couple of Christmas gifts and resuming work on a very, very old UFO.

In November and December, I decided to set myself a little goal of working on something crafty for at least 15 minutes a day.  Apart from three days, it has worked a treat.
On the social side of stitching, we once again attended Scrub Stitchin’.
I also participated in the Chookshed Stitchers Zoom parties.  The friendship of these ladies is a wonderful thing to be a part of.  Our Zoom days were one positive thing to come out of COVID-19.

I had planned to have a leader and ender project, but other than a few HST, that hasn’t eventuated.

Likewise, I don’t have any extra donation projects to show for the year.  I have one quilt top stitched and six more quilts cut out, ready to go.  That is still better than nothing. They will be good to practice my machine quilting next year.
On the non stitching front, we did quite a bit of travel with our caravan during the year, travelling to Queensland for New Year, then in April to Scrub Stitchin’.
After heading home for three days, we were off again to the Mundi Mundi Bash and through some of Victoria.
A week after I finished work, we headed off for three months travelling through South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia.  It was a wonderful trip, visiting such interesting places and learning so much about this vast country we live in.  Having said that, at the end of the three months, we were quite ready to return to our home.  Since then we have had another quick trip to Queensland.

When it comes down to it, it only felt like retirement commenced after we returned home from our travels.  Being away was a great transition, getting work out of our heads, but still being occupied.  We haven’t done anything much since, just taking everything day by day.  It’s lovely not having to set the alarm clock for an early start in the morning.  We definitely haven’t been bored, but haven’t achieved anything ground breaking either, not that we really need to.

My non stitching goals this year were also a bit of fun.

I just had a little tally up.  I read, or listened to, 20 books.  More than for quite some time.

We actually were out on various motorcycle rides four times this year.  That is still very little, but better than the last few years.

We continue to enjoy trying new recipes.

Each month we had at least one fun day out, although, now that I’m not working, often no longer on a Friday.

So, on reflection, 2022 was a good year for us.  We are looking forward to 2023 and whatever it may bring, as we continue to transition to our new, non-working life.

October Goals Wrap Up

This was an interesting month for us, as it was the first month where we have been at home and neither of us has had to go to work.  We are slowly working out a bit of a daily routine and enjoying not having to rush to do things in the limited amount of time out of work hours.

It’s time to check in with my goals for October.  I didn’t do too badly, either.

ONE MONTHLY GOAL

My OMG was to complete the Churn Dash quilt top.  Tick.

RAINBOW SCRAP CHALLENGE
All my blocks have been made.  I need to embroider antennae on the butterflies and then piece the Butterflies and Nine Patch quilt top and the Black and White HST quilt top.  I’v put them both away for the moment, along with the Drunkard Path Blocks from RSC 2020.  At this stage, I think that I will just aim to put these together next year, once the busy time of the year has passed.  The Black and White HST, could also class as my RSC blocks for next year, as the blocks still have to be pieced.  We’ll see.

ONE PROJECT A MONTH
I was happy to have a few finishes, all unplanned.  There are eight cushions for our outdoor table and chairs.
Also, the pouch for the little blender for the caravan.

Kris has announced that this will be the last year of OPAM.  I can fully understand her reasoning for winding it up.  It has been a fun ride, so I’d better make sure I have some finishes for the last couple of months.

FRIDAY NIGHT WITH FRIENDS
Yes, I worked on the cushions.

BLUE QUILT
I had no definite goal, other than to work on some more EPP units.  In the end I have completed sixteen.  I had hoped to complete a further two, but that didn’t happen.  Not that I’m worried, this is my slow stitching project with no deadline.

On the non stitching front this is how we went:

READ A BOOK
This only scraped in…….sort of…. I read a very quick little ebook one evening.  “Tilda” is designed for children.  When the spiel said “L.M.Montgomery meets Ruth Park” I had to give it a go.  It is about a girl who ended up in a convent orphanage in South Australia in the early 1900s.  OK, but nothing to rave over.

TRY A NEW RECIPE

I actually tried a few.
Firstly, just after Christmas, I bought some jars of fruit mince on clearance for next to nothing.  I had been on the lookout for a recipe and stumbled across one in a book written by Kerry Swain from Nundle, so lots of us bloggers will have a copy.
It was a nice and easy slice.  I’ll definitely be making it again.
I also made “Queen Elizabeth’ Cake”.  I’ll include it in a separate post.
I had bought a couple of cake mixes to take away with us, but in the end didn’t use them.  I have made one of them at home and it turned out beautifully.  I have another one to use up soon. I’m not generally a packet cake cook, but when they turn out so well, you can see why they are popular.

FRIDAY FUN DAY

Well, I’m not sure if any happened on a Friday, but we had loads of fun days in October.  October and November, along with March and April are that busy time of year when so many things are happening around the area, due to the weather generally being the best of the year.  They will also have a separate post.

GO FOR A MOTORCYCLE RIDE.

Yes, we actually went for a ride on “Snubby” the silver sidecar.  Once again, a separate post coming up.

So, all in all, not a bad effort for the month.

I have been rather lax in keeping up with my blogging of our doings, but I think I may have needed a little break after the mammoth effort of documenting our big trip.

I’m now looking forward to seeing what November brings.
