Off to See the Wizard - Our Final Day in Alice Springs

We had a fairly quiet day on our final day in Alice Springs.

The morning saw us visit the Desert Park for a bird show, where they had various birds flying around the audience.
The presenter just pulled out different foods from her pouch and the birds came in.  They are so well trained.
We were intrigued by the buzzard who actually uses a stone to break into emu eggs.  It is instinctive, as the parent birds don’t teach the young.  It is the only Aussie bird that does this.
The barn owl was beautiful, with its white heart shaped face.  They fly so quietly that they cannot be heard by very sensitive recorders.  This is achieved by a ragged edge to their wings, which are a bit fluffy.

The other birds were too hard to photograph.
There were several aviaries around the park with many different birds.  This fellow is an orange chat.
Our next presentation was by Jeremy, who told us all about how the aboriginals survived in the area, what food they ate, how they hunted and collected it, what tools they used and how the family and tribal systems worked.
We didn’t stay to look around the entire park, but went back into town to do a few things.  Firstly, we called into the Aboriginal Fabric Gallery again for me to buy a little more fabric and this time I even remembered to take a photo.  It is nice and bright and was doing a brisk trade in selling fabric to patchworkers.

Following getting the groceries, we had a lazy afternoon in the caravan park and I even baked a slice and frittata.

In the late afternoon, the owner of the park came over and invited us, and another couple who had also been on the bus trip, to join him and his family to go out to dinner, which was lovely.  We have a very enjoyable evening.  The perfect way to complete our stay in the area.

So, what was our final verdict on Alice Springs?  After our apprehension on the first day we did enjoy our visit very much.  There was so much to see and do, and we definitely didn’t see and do it all.  A great place to visit.

The highlight of the day was our dinner out with a great bunch of people.
