Remember I cursed the wool winder that used to be my Dad’s in a recent post.
At the time, I said that a new wool winder would be on the shopping list. They are a surprisingly difficult thing to find and Spotlight doesn’t stock them. Prices can vary on line from about $20 to about $200. They aren’t something that I use very often, as in, I have had Dad’s in my cupboard for about seven years and this is the first time I’ve used it. Therefore, I don’t want to spend very much.
While I was looking on line, Mick asked to have a look at Dad’s. Before long, he was showing me a perfectly wound ball of string line in his shed. Darn, I forgot to take a photo. So for the price of nothing I have a working wool winder. Saved from landfill. Thanks Mick.
Looking at it, I’d say that my Dad also saved it from landfill. Where there is normally a plastic cone, this one has a homemade metal cone, which he covered in a woollen fabric. The problem was the metal guide that the yarn flows through. You can see it lying down beside the winder. He had made a ring at the top (not a spiral), which was too high, meaning as the ball grew it wound off the top of the cone. The next spiral down was too low, meaning the yarn ended up getting caught in the gears, and the bottom one was totally useless. Mick just made a guide at the height between the top two guides that Dad had made and all is good.
A great make do and mend project.
That is a great save by Mick!!
