Langness

On Wednesday morning we woke up bright and early. We’d finally caught up on our sleep.  After breakfast we decided to go for a walk. When we got down to the waterfront, Mick looked across the bay and asked if we’d ever been over there?  No.  Well, let’s go now.

So, we hopped in our little car and headed off.  We didn’t even know the name of the headland, but as a result of visiting the Information Centre, we now had a very detailed map, which informed us the headland was called Langness.  It also showed that the road ran out quite a bit before the end of the headland where the light house is situated.

We found our way in the right direction and kept on driving until we could go no further, which was in fact, quite a bit further than we expected. We passed some ruined stone buildings along the way. It had been quite a complex in its day.

There were also heaps of blackberries there, and heaps of bees and a couple actually sat still for me.

We finally came to a car park and started walking along the Coastal Path.  There were quite a few others there, mainly walking their dogs.

It was another good chance to check out the wild flowers.

And the lichen.

Eventually, we came to the lighthouse.

Like the one at Douglas Head, it was beautifully maintained.  I think this is turning out to be a lighthouse spotting trip, going on our form so far.

Out a bit further was the fog horn.  It doesn’t look like it gets used these days, but I may be quite wrong on that one.

I wouldn’t be standing there in a fog, Mick, if they still do use it.

It was a lovely walk out to the lighthouse.  The weather was looking a bit misty to the south and west, but we had ideal weather for walking.  And, we were all finished by about 9.30am.  Still plenty of day to play the tourist.

By the way, on our way back I noticed this attractive house.  Look closely at the insignia on the gable.

I think that would have to be one of the most elegant versions of the Legs of Man that I have seen.  I just love the way the Celtic knot is incorporated in the Legs.  Beautiful.

  3. Did you know that all of the light houses here on the island were designed by Robert Louis Stevenson's Grand Father?
And Jeremy Clarkson used to live in one of the houses along the Langness footpath?
